I fished with 5 gentlemen in the afternoon. The water cleared from the morning, it was dirty due to boat traffic and low levels. We fished several holes picking up a fish or two here and there. We caught 9 silvers and two chums. We let go several chums and lost 3 silvers.

We saw an otter at the same spot as yesterday, it was swimming up river dove and drug a filleted carcass back down river, a cool sight that we all enjoyed.

I am taking the weekend off, thankfully there was allot of traffic and big boats headed to the river. Be careful, in my opinion some of the larger boats will not have the water depth or room to maneuver in a safe manner.

I fished with a group of four today. They wanted a full limit so we caught 4 fresh chums, let 8 go in doing this and then went after silvers. We hooked several fish and landed 7 silvers. We lost two silvers very close to the boat. The last silver was caught as a lure dangled from a branch, jigging works!!!

I saw moose, a beaver, coyote and black bear today.

I fished with two gentlemen in the afternoon. These guys wanted to hook and land fish. The derby was tied 11 to 11 with the sole silver winning the tie. We lost over twenty fish and missed 15 bites.

I fished with three clients in a good rain tonight. We hooked and landed several fish per angler. It should be noted that we were only a sockeye away from catching all of the 5 Pacific Salmon today. We landed and immediately released a 15 pound King, caught a small Pink one silver and several chums.

I fished this morning with two fly fisherman from New Mexico. We hooked and landed approximately 30 chums and two silver salmon. The water levels are close to normal for this time of year but dropping. I saw a Cow Moose and a calf today on the river.

The water was up a bit and a little dirtier than the last time I fished. I fished this morning with a group of four. We caught 6 silvers and 3 chums. We also hooked and lost two other salmon, one was a silver the other I am not sure about. I saw 6 moose today a 2 cows each with a calf, a bull and a lone cow. We had a beaver swim 10 ft from the boat as well. Fishing should only improve daily and we have openings next week, give us a call.

I had a group of four this morning for a silver salmon trip. We landed one silver, had two other salmon on and had another bite. I am not sure if the two that got off were silvers or chums. It was a slow day of fishing, the water is very low and a couple of boats make it very murky in a hurry. We did see a bull Moose, Cow moose with 2 calves (in the upper parking lot), a river otter, a beaver, several eagles and ducks.

I took my wife, kids, nephews and niece to the lake for some pike fishing. We had a great derby with some top water action and caught two very large pike one was 38" the other was 44". It was great to be out and having a good time relaxing and fishing.

I fished a early afternoon group starting at 11:00 due to the early am trip. I fished with 3 young boys and their father. The 6 year old hung a 24 pound fish on the first drift. It was an epic battle, with the 52 pound boy winning. The second fish was a 22 pounder caught by Dad about 6 minutes later, The third and fourth fish were about 15 pounds and 11pounds each caught over the next 50 minutes. The morning and afternoon trips today were lots of fun for everyone involved including the guide!

I fished the Deshka with two guests today. The water level was good and the fish were moving. We caught one king salmon, 18 pounds, on the first drift. We had it in the boat at 6:04. We hooked another fish 10 minutes later but had to wait until 7:05 to hook and land the second fish. There are lots of eagles and shore birds on the river and a report of a brown bear two days ago.

I fished with four guests today, we hooked 5 king salmon on salmon eggs, spinners and plugs. We only managed to land one of the fish a 17 pounder in good condition. The Deshka is very busy and the number of fish below the weir is getting smaller daily. Lots of birds today, no moose or bears.

King fishing has been slow. We are getting 3 to 5 bites per trip and it appears that 2 of them are likely jacks. The river will close Friday night at 11pm as per an EO from ADF&G.

On the bright side we will be fishing on the parks highway, the Kaswitna River was a good spot the other day as i fished it with two other guides on a scouting trip. The other Highway streams are likely to produce fish as well this weekend.

I fished today with four clients. The water was dirty today and this made for tough fishing. We had 6 bites, fought 4 fish landed two but let a 22" Jack go. We also lost a large (30-35 pound) and Bright King as it jumped next to the boat. We saw Moose, Ducks, and a beaver. I will not be fishing in the morning but will be back at it Friday.

I took Lori and the girls out for a short ride. We saw a moose, Duck with ducklings, a beaver and a river otter. We also managed to hook and land a small 12 pound king while sitting on the anchor eating lunch. Talk about being excited, Kaylee fought it most of the way in after I saw that it was not a hog. The water was very dirty this afternoon, not sure if it is coming up or the boat traffic.

Took a group of four out this morning. The water was down a bit and had good visibility. We saw several moose including one cow with a very small calf. We had 5 bites today hooking 4 fish. We lost two of the fish, one was a smaller king, slightly bigger than a jack the other looked to be a 25 pound fish. The two we caught were 15 and 34 pounds. Both fish were caught on K15 kwick fish.

I fished the afternoon with two wonderful ladies in search of King Salmon. The water remains high and muddy but the clarity was better in the afternoon than in the morning. We saw several moose and ducks. The fishing was slow but we managed two bites and boated both fish just shy of 6 hours. Being persistent helps. The fish were 32 and 34 pounds each and covered in sea lice. I have a few openings left this week and expect the fishing to improve as the run progresses.

I fished this morning with three guests. The water is up a foot from yesterday. It is dirty with lots of trees, sticks, grass, leaves and other debris in the river. We had a great trip that started of with a 30 lb fish in the boat in the first 15 minutes. The fish was bright but did not have sea lice. The remainder of the trip produced two bites with one hookup but the fish self released after a moment.
We saw lots of birds and a couple of moose today. The fishing should improve over the next few days and we have open seats.

I have had a busy couple of days. The river opened to bait and we have been catching our limit every time we have gone out. I have had 6 trips and taken family out as well. The fishing has slowed down today and the boat traffic is still high but not quite as bad as it has been in past years.

We caught all 5 species of Pacific Salmon the first two days of bait, including a fresh sockeye, a very old and moldy King and several Pinks and Chums.

Kaylee (3 1/2), Juliann (4 mos.) and I just returned home from the river. We are getting ready to smoke our catch! Kaylee fought her first salmon today and won. Hatchers Pass & Talketna

I took a drive over Hatchers Pass and went to Talketna 7-28. If you have not done this it is a great drive and offers lots of beautiful scenery. We also shopped in Talketna, I was surprised at the prices, they are very comparable to Anchorage and the Valley. So id you are wanting to do some shopping and take a drive give it a go.
On a side not I examined the launch and have made some arrangements to include the Talketna river and clear creek for next year.

I fished with a returning group of clients the 27th. Five people fished catching 10 Silver Salmon, 4 Chum Salmon, 3 Pink Salmon and 1 Sockeye Salmon. We hooked and lost 6 or 7 other fish which appeared to be silver salmon. The fishing continues to be excellent despite higher than average water conditions. The water is dirty but should clear as it drops over the next two days. We are catching our fish on spinners and small plugs.
This day we saw a Moose, geese, cranes and ducks on the river.

The water has come up nearly a foot overnight and is very dirty. Fishing was more of a challenge today. Family Pike Trip

We went Pike fishing over the 4th of July. We Caught a few good fish but it was slow, likely due to the pressure from Lake Creek guides on the lake.
We put linoleum in the cabin, installed a refrigerator and I hung the moose rack from last year. We also built a fire pit and knocked down the grass around the cabin. The tubing on the lake was OK, it was a bit cold but the kids do not seem to mind. My nephews helped me chase squirrels and fished with the neighbor boys. A great trip.

Today was very slow on the river. There were only a few boats. The water remains very low, we touched bottom today cutting a corner. We caught one kingsalmon that weighed 17 pounds and 4 jacks. we had the most bites of any trip this year, I contribute this to little boat traffic and several unfished holes.

I took 3 guests fishing and we caught two king salmon. One weighed 14 pounds the other weighed 20 pounds. The water is very low and clear. This changes as soon as two or three boats pass. The fish are not holding in very many holes and may take several drifts to enduce a bite. We had three bites on this trip.

I just spent five days on the river fishing with clients. The water conditions are far from perfect for king salmon and the fishing has been challenging. The water is very low and clear, this pushes the fish into smaller pockets within the holes. Early fishing is the best and finding the fish is the biggest challenge. With the low water levels there is a decrease in current increasing the challenge of backtrolling, I have noticed allot more anchors being used the last few days.
We have seen a wide variety of wildlife from bull moose, cows with calves (in the parking lot and river at he launch), Beavers, Muskrats, Eagles, Geese and Goslings, Ducks with chicks and a wide variety of shore birds.
The fishing has improved slightly in the last few days, I have landed a fish for each client on my last three trips. One client did not take a fih home, he elected to try for a larger fish.
Today we hooked 4 kings landing two jacks, a 12 pounder and a 24 pound fish. The fish have been very bright with only a few red ones coming from up river. I have only seen two fish from down river that have had any color on them, one was quite red.

I went to the Deshka today to catch some Hooligan. I filled cooler in minutes, that will hold me over until next spring. It was a great time and they are still plentifull in the river.

Spring Fishing

Spring is upon us and the ice has gone out on the Little Su and Big Su. There are a few reports of fish being caught on the Deshka at the mouth but fishing is still slow. I have been getting the rods, reels and tackle ready as well as putting a fresh coat of paint on the boat and floorboards. Cabin December and January

I have been up to the lake every weekend since Christmas. I have set out a few traps with my nephews, we are trying to catch Martin and ermine. I have also put out a couple of Beaver sets next to an active beaver hutch. We have had three martin in our sets and they have escaped. I have caught one ermine and two beaver. The temps have been from +30 F to -20 F on our trips with 0 to -5 being the norm.

We have caught a few pike, most trips are overnight and we have not set tipups out, be we did catch a 38" in Pike in Late December.

I fished my Last two trips on the Little Su this year with two couples from Texas. We had a great time despite the spitting rain and low water. The first day we got on the fish and caught our limit. The second day however we landed four silvers and a chum and lost a few other fish. The water is very low, I hit bottom up river on a drop off trip and I can go very shallow. All in all it was a great year of fishing, I will blog about our moose hunts, fall pike trips and winter trips to the cabin.

I fished the Little Su for the last week for Silver Salmon. We fished two trips on most days and I neglected to have Lori post my fishing reports. We caught our limit of Silver Salmon on every trip except for one. We had the fish on and had lots of bites during that trip but just did not get them all in. The fishing has slowed with over 2000 silvers taken through the booth since the opening to bait.

I was able to take the family fishing and watched my 3 year old fight a fish, with lots of help and coaching. She then got mad when I refused to put eggs on her Barbie pole, I did not want her to loose it. She said, "I want those" and pointed to the bait. I think she will be one heck of a fisherman in a few years.

I will be fishing three more trips this week and be happy to report how they go.

The afternoon group was a family from Texas, we managed to catch at least one fish per person but it was tough fishing. The water was dirty from all of the boat traffic.

I fished the river yesterday with a great group of boys. One was from Missouri and the other two were from Palmer. They were 15, 13 and 11 years old. We caught 8 silvers and one Chum salmon between the four of us. The fishing was very good, I was the second guide back at the landing and was done at 10:00 am. Three other guides were limited out before their trip was over at 12:00.

I also had a drop off fisherman up river and he caught 4 fish, one of which was a silver.

I fished today with two groups, an AM and PM. I fished two anglers in each group.

We caught 5 silver salmon and one chum salmon in the morning. We could see fish swimming past us in some of the holes but did not get many bites. I think these may have been chum and pink salmon. The water was very low and it did not take long to become cloudy from the boat traffic.

We caught two silver and 5 chum salmon in the afternoon. The fishing was slower than the morning and the water down river had less than a foot of visibility. holes that we fished in the morning were not fishable in the afternoon.

I will not be fishing tomorrow, I am replacing a lower unit bearing seal and hope to be on the river Thursday.

I fished the Little Su today with four clients. The water remains very low, we bumped the bottom on one corner and were just seconds away from a tight passage with another boat. If you are on the river use caution and watch out for the big inboards, they are going all out on the weekends.

We caught 13 fish today, 2 chums, 2 pinks and 9 silvers. It was a great day of fishing with light rain. We saw a moose, beaver, cranes and lots of ducks today.

I fished with four clients today. We landed over a dozen fish, unfortunately none of them were silver salmon. We had one large silver on and by the boat but it got off before we could net it.

I fished today with two gentleman from out of state. We departed the landing at 7:30 am and caught three silvers and 8 chum salmon and one Pink Salmon. The water is low and clear and I expect that it will be murky with traffic this weekend.

I fished the Little Su today in the morning and the afternoon. We landed three silvers in the morning and two in the afternoon. We also landed a enough chums to fill everyones bag limit had the desired to do so. The silvers are sparse at this time but I expect to see more coming every day.

I fished yesterday with three clients in the afternoon. The water has dropped slightly and was very dirty due to boat traffic. We caught two silvers, 5 chums and 2 pink salmon. We had several other fish on but just did not get them to the boat. The fishing has been consistent and the silvers are still trickling in. I am fishing July 23rd and hope to report more silvers in the boat.

I fished the Little Su today with two clients. I started the day by seeing a Bull and Cow Moose just before the River and A cow and a calf in the Parking lot of the river. The water has cleared some and i could see some Chums holding in holes near the landing. We had a great trip, we hooked several fish bringing home two silvers and three bright Chum salmon. We fought and released several other Chums. I would expect to start seeing more fish moving in on the high tides this week.

I fished the Little Su today with 3 clients. The water was low but cloudy, the USGS web site show the water rising slightly. We caught 4 silver Salmon, 4 chum Salmon and a Pink Salmon. We lost 5 other salmon during the trip. All of the fish were very bright and distinguishing the Chums from the silvers was difficult until we got them out of the water. We fished several holes and had the majority of the bites in one hole. It would appear that the fishing is still spotty for the early season but the run is building.

July Pike

I have spent the last two weeks Pike fishing at the lake. Lori, Kaylee and I have spent 9 days at the lake fishing, swimming and working. We built a shed and completed it to move the tools out of the cabin so we can focus on relaxing there. I have added lights (gas and electric) to the cabin and will be adding a fridge, flooring and finish work this winter. Lori would like to spend a few weeks out there next summer.

Kaylee caught her first fish, a 16 inch pike. She cast the lure, was reeling and said, " It wiggled Dad", and dropped her rod. Mom coached her to pick it up and reel it in, she liked it and fished for two more hours non stop. That kid has her priorities straight. She also went for her first tube ride behind the boat and her first Alaskan lake swim. She loved both. The down side is she threw a fit when we were packing up to leave, she did not want to go.

I will start Silver fishing this week and will report on fishing daily.

I fished with a group of four guests today and we caught three small kings between 8 and 14 pounds. We also caught three Jacks in the lower holes on the river. I fished with four guests today on an eight hour trip. We caught three king salmon and lost a fourth after the tide went out. The fish were between 14 and 24 pounds and all were very fresh. It appears that a few fresh fish are still coming in on the tides. The water remains low but has come up slightly with the rain. It was very cold this morning, 34 at the landing.

I fished with a group of 3 in the afternoon today and we caught 2 king salmon weiging 17 and 19 pounds. The water remains low and clear.

I fished the morning with two groups of two. We fished the lower river as the tide was coming in. We caught one King Salmon in mid 20's range during the first drift and two Jacks about one hour later as the tide began to run out. We fished several holes coming back up the river and caught one more King in the upper 20 pound range. Both of the larger fish had sea lice but one was blush and the other was chrome/ grey. The fishing has been steady with groups of four getting between 4 and 8 bites during the morning trips.

Greg fished with two groups of two. They had five bites, fought five fish and boated three. The fish weighed fourteen, eighteen, and twenty-one pounds. The river has come up slightly and became a little bit muddy, but is still fishable. Today they saw several beavers, many eagles, ducks and a cow moose with twin calves walking along the edge of the river. Greg's clients also saw a black bear along the bank.

On the way down river, Greg and his clients saw a black bear about a mile below the landing. Greg had four clients. It was a cool morning - overcast. They had five bites, fought three fish and boated one that was twenty one pounds. Water conditions remain low and clear despite recent rainfall in the Little Susitna drainage.

Greg fished with four clients in the afternoon. They missed several bites, but boated two jacks and two small kings weighing about fifteen pounds. They saw a cow moose and her calf wading the river. All in all it was a good day of fishing.

I fished the Little Su today with 5 clients, the fishing has been and continued to be good. We had 8 bites, hooked 5 and boated three fish. They weighed 21, 25 & 26 pounds. The clients had enough fish and when the rain began we called it a day. I think that I could have got a 4th fish in the boat in the last hour of fishing.

I fished with two clients today, we had three bites and landed two fish for a 100% catch rate. We boated our first fish at 6:15 am, a nice 34 lb male that was very fresh. The client was a returning customer and commented that in two trips he has spent less than 45 minutes fishing for kings. We had a good bite, great hookset but did not get a fish at 8:30. I refished the hole and hooked a fish and boated it at 8:45. A nice female that weighed 22 pounds, but was longer than the 34 pound male we caught.

I spent the morning fishing with 4 other guides, we have an annual derby and rowing contest. The fishing was slow with a 18" Jack and 34 lb king landed just after 10:00 am. We had a great time and it was nice to sit in a seat while being rowed.

My afternoon trip was with two clients, we had 6 bites, hooked four and landed two fish. The fish we landed were small but king salmon. The two that got away were better fish, one looked to be about 25 lbs and was ocean bright in the sun as it jumped. The other looked to be over 30 lbs and had a hint of red on the side. I had a good look at it as it came to the boat before the second run.

We fished the Little Su today and the river was busy. We had four bites hooked and landed three of the fish. We caught a 26 lb fish, 24 lb fish and a 16" jack. The water remains high but fairly clear. The fishing remains slow on the river there were 14 fish through the booth when i left at 1:45 pm today and I know that 11 of those were caught by myself and other guides.

I went out for an afternoon trip with a family of four. Th weather was great and the water was excellent. We had four bites on the trip but did not boat a fish. The morning trips of other guides had similar results with even fewer bites. I attribute it to the large number of boats on the river. It seems the boat traffic spooks the fish and we are not able to fish as many prime holes.

I took my wife and two friends fishing today. The water was low and dropped throughout the day. We hooked two kings and landed a nice 28 lb male. This made my wife and 2 year old very excited. The river was very busy and the fish count at the booth was 8 when we went through. There were several guides fishing and lots of boats I did not recognize. I would guess they were Deshka fisherman. I expect to see more fish coming in through this week if the run follows the past trends.

May King Fishing

Late May King Salmon fishing was what we expected. There were a few fish in the river but hooking and landing them was difficult. We fought three fish and landed one on our three may trips. First King Of the Year.

We had our first king salmon trip of the year on the Little Su and brought home a 28.5 pound female. The fish had some color and no sea lice. We had another bite but did not get the hook set, for an early may trip we met our goal of a fish in the box. I would expect the fishing to improve over the next week as the run matures. The water conditions were excellent but with the warm weather I expect to see more color this week.
